New Jersey is celebrating the launch of a new initiative aimed at improving maternal and infant outcomes. TeamBirth is a national model that gives the patient an opportunity to address any concerns they may have with their medical team, giving the mother for the first time a real say in their treatment plan. It’s being implemented at three hospitals and a birthing center in the state. First Lady Tammy Murphy says the program will also help ensure equity for women of color. Data shows a Black mother is seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications that a white mother.
“…And a black baby is three times more likely to die before the first birthday than a white baby. Behind the statistics are obviously real women maybe some families and together we can ensure that they not only come into this world happy and healthy but they live well into the years,” said Murphy.
